Composer/pianist Bran Friedland presents a Boston debut concert of original music for big band. An emotive and bold composer, Friedland's many big band works capture a explore range of emotions and ideas brought to life and enhanced by an accomplished, dedicated 17-piece band. Tinting a modern jazz influences ranging from classical minimalism to techno with attempts to reflect personal experiences, his writing displays a relentless creativity and open-mindedness that is quickly evident. Grammy nominated composer, USC faculty member, and musical collaborator Kim Richmond describes Friedland's music as "not only professional quality material, but inspirationally crafted, an excellent and interesting mix of art works. He shows his dedication towards creating and performing new music." Many of Friedland's works for this concert were composed while working with New Engand Conservatory's Jazz Composer's Orcherstra, where Friedland earned his Master's degree in jazz composition and met many members of his band. The band also features many of his frequent collaborators in Boston, and draws on repertoire he wrote for his six piece band Rhombus. While the band obviously has no accolades, being a new ensemble, the players comprise many of Boston's most creative minds and respected improvisers. Visit www.brianfriedland.com to stay tuned about their future performances and to find out more about Friedland's other projects. The Band: Woodwinds: Laura Heinrich, Mark Zaleski, Rick Stone, Jon Bean, Tucker Antell, Kathy Olson Trumpets: Dan Henderson, Vivek Patel, Jerry Sabitini, Jared Burrell Trombones: Tim Schneir, Randy Pingrey, Clayton Dewalt Tuba: Beth McDonald Rhythm Section: Phil Sargent (guitar), John Funkhouser (piano), Ehud Etun (bass), Mike Connors (Drums) Vocals: Laura Grill Program notes: We will be playing my five most recent works for big band, each of which reflects a distinct story or deeply explores a musical idea. Along the Coast (2007) attempts to capture the diverse and stunning scenery encountered during a drive up the Pacific Coast Highway. Sanctuary (2008) is a dialog between clarinet and voice that was inspired by an amazing conversation I had during an amazing week at Burning Man, a festival dedicated to radical self-expression and participation set in Nevada's Black Rock Desert. Kaleidoscope (2009) playfully explores how a melody can be fractured into different rhythmic formations and combined in myriad ways to form surprising distortions and echoes. Big Crazzle (2010) is a humorous piece that sends two quirky themes on an epic adventure with dashes of Mozart, Rachmaninoff and classic techno beats along the way. Will You Be (2006) is a ballad in 5/4 time that quickly alternates between dark and bright harmonies. Lyrics written by songwriter and vocalist Kathleen Grace are based on a true story of a woman trapped on a remote island and her struggle to survive.
